Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, has been suspended indefinitely by ABC. The network announced the decision on Wednesday, September 17, following widespread backlash over Kimmel’s remarks about the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. ABC’s parent company, Disney, joined the network in pre-empting the show with no set date for its return.

An ABC spokesperson confirmed to USA TODAY that “Jimmy Kimmel Live! will be pre-empted indefinitely.” This move reflects escalating pressure from regulators and broadcast partners after Kimmel’s September 16 monologue drew criticism from the head of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Kimmel’s controversial segment accused supporters of former President Donald Trump—often referred to as the MAGA community—of distancing themselves from the accused shooter while seizing on the tragedy for political gain. He said, “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”

USA TODAY reached out to Kimmel’s team for a response but has not received a reply as of publication.

Earlier that day, Nexstar Media Group Inc.—the largest owner of ABC affiliates—announced it would stop airing Jimmy Kimmel Live! across its 32 ABC-affiliated stations. Andrew Alford, president of Nexstar’s broadcasting division, called Kimmel’s comments “offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse.”

The Federal Communications Commission’s chair, Brendan Carr, intensified the pressure during an interview on commentator Benny Johnson’s YouTube show on September 17. Carr warned ABC and Disney that the matter could be handled “the easy way or the hard way.” He added, “There are calls for Kimmel to be fired. I think a suspension over this is a very real possibility.”

This confluence of station-level pre-emptions and federal warnings has reignited debate over free speech boundaries in entertainment. Broadcasters must navigate complex expectations: they face demands for accountability from viewers and regulators, yet they also defend hosts’ rights to critique political events.

Looking back at Kimmel’s on-air remarks helps explain why the reaction was so intense. During his September 16 opening monologue, he directly blamed the MAGA community for downplaying the suspect’s motives and exploiting the shooting. His wording struck many as harsh, particularly so soon after the tragedy.

In a separate broadcast on September 11, Kimmel had criticized Trump for placing blame on Democrats instead of uniting the nation. He noted that Presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton each issued statements urging unity after similar tragedies. By contrast, Trump’s remarks risked deepening partisan divides, Kimmel argued.

Across the country, the fallout from Charlie Kirk’s killing has extended far beyond late-night television. Social media posts deemed offensive or insensitive have cost many their jobs or prompted suspensions. A Phoenix sportswriter and a University of Mississippi faculty member were among those disciplined. School staff in Idaho, Indiana and South Carolina faced investigations after online commentary. Emergency responders, a theater professor, other university personnel in Tennessee, and even a Marine Corps recruiter also encountered professional repercussions.

Major organizations took swift action. American Airlines and Delta Air Lines disciplined employees over social media posts. Clemson University placed staff on leave. The Joe Burrow Foundation and the Carolina Panthers addressed problematic commentary by team-affiliated personnel. In Nashville, a well-known restaurant group confirmed it let go several employees because of their online statements.

The suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! brings into focus media companies’ responsibility to balance creative freedom with audience sensitivities. Political satire has long been a staple of late-night lineups. Yet when commentary touches on real-world violence, networks may feel compelled to draw lines.

For ABC and Disney, pulling Kimmel’s show represents a rare step. Networks typically allow hosts to weather controversies and issue apologies if necessary. Here, regulators and affiliates pre-empted that cycle, signaling a zero-tolerance approach to remarks viewed as exacerbating political tensions.

The heart of the matter lies in tragedy meeting partisanship. The killing of Charlie Kirk is a national shock that exposed deep political fault lines. As broadcasters, social media users, and institutions react, society must weigh free speech rights against the duty to respect victims and maintain civil discourse.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! remains off the air for now. Whether it returns unchanged, emerges with new editorial guidelines, or undergoes host changes will depend on negotiations behind the scenes. Meanwhile, the debate over satire’s scope in a polarized era continues to dominate headlines and watercooler conversations alike.
